What Are the Precautions for Using Ball Neck Type Forgings?

Ball Neck Type Forgings are core automotive safety components with a unique "swan neck" curve structure, manufactured through precision die forging. They are primarily used in vehicle chassis traction systems (such as trailer hitches) and steering connections. By combining the streamlined metal fibers of high-strength alloy steel with a complex geometry, they provide fatigue strength, impact toughness, and extremely high load-bearing capacity far exceeding that of cast parts. They are key components ensuring stable connections during heavy traction and dynamic driving. Today, Tongxin Precision will share some points that workers need to pay attention to when using them.

Regarding the Installation and Assembly Stage

Surface Quality Inspection: Before installation, the effect of the surface shot blasting treatment must be confirmed. Workers need to check that the surface of the Ball Neck Type Forgings is free of folds, cracks, inclusions, or obvious machining scratches. Even minor surface defects can evolve into fatigue cracks under high-frequency vibration.

Matching Tightening Torque: Ball neck forgings are typically used in conjunction with connecting parts. During assembly, the preload torque value required by the vehicle design must be strictly adhered to. Excessive tightness can lead to frictional wear, while excessive tightness may cause plastic deformation of the threaded section.

Coating and Corrosion Protection: Since these products are mostly used in automotive chassis or external racks, the working environment is harsh. During installation, ensure the surface anti-corrosion coating (such as electrophoresis, galvanizing, or painting) is intact. If scratches occur during installation, repaint immediately to prevent electrochemical corrosion.

Regarding Use and Maintenance

Overloading is strictly prohibited: Each Ball Neck Type Forging has its rated vertical load (S-Value) and traction load (D-Value). In actual use (such as trailers or heavy loads), it is strictly forbidden to exceed the design limits, otherwise it may cause neck bending or ball joint detachment.

Regular Non-Destructive Testing: For forgings that have been used in high-end vehicles or construction machinery for a long time, it is recommended to perform magnetic particle testing (MT) or dye penetrant testing (PT) during the maintenance cycle, especially at the neck and thread root, to detect fatigue cracks invisible to the naked eye as early as possible.

Ambient Temperature Sensitivity: In extremely cold environments, some alloy steels may exhibit cold brittleness. If the vehicle is operating in extremely low temperature environments, a basic inspection of the connection points should be performed before starting to avoid sudden large impact loads.
